At long last, the concluding chapter of Roman history! Let's tie the bow on Byzantine Constantinople as the empire comes to an end, slightly earlier than we might think, but far later than anybody ever could have expected.

Wow, do I need that laugh emoji for a like. The Byzantines(Romans), just like their brethren to the West, deserved every rotten event that took place. Cows coming home, chickens roosting etc.

Let’s be honest, byzantines being overrun, attacked and constantly screwed yet somehow still standing is basically warhammer 40k. Feel like there’s some inspiration there especially in the whole ‘fight for the emperor’ and the glory of the empire bit. I like them even more now

I don't understand the people who blames muslims or Turks for the fall of Byzantine Empire. Dude Byzantine Empire has fallen in 1204 and their Christian brotherin did it. After that it was just extra time. Even Mehmed II was utterly disappointed when he entered the city for the first time after the siege. He probably was expecting the city from the stories he have heard but it was a ruin. I imagine Belisarius felt the same way when he took Rome from barbarians. Huge disappointment.

The values of Christianity was the reason this empire lacked military grit. The strongest walls in existence, Greek fire, foreign mercenaries and dumb luck was the reason it survived as long as it did. Rome and Greece died because their values died. Byzantium was no more than their luxuriously decorated mausoleum.

The byzantine empire is my favorite historical civilization and the long defeat of the empire is, in my opinion, the single most tragic event, culminating in 1453, in western history. I always get so frustrated reading about how the latins, normans, italians and slavs did seemingly more damage than the turks yet once the romans fell and nothing lay between the hordes of turks and europe they would suffer for it.....

It seems to me that the Crusaders were the ancient equivalent of ISIS or the Taliban. A bunch of zealous extremists who are always, without exception bad news, but for some reason dumbass governments keep trying to use them for political means, then act surprised when it bites them in the ass. Here's a little bonus fact: After Nicea restored the empire, not all the successor states joined back up, and would continue to be independent even after 1453, with the last one, the Principality of Theodoro surviving until 1475.

The byzantines, for some quite big period of time, had the europe's monopoly of producing and processing silk . They used leaves of mulberries trees for silkworm's feed . Peloponesse was kind specialized in silkworms breeding , because the region was suitable for this tree's growth , so in greek mulberries tree is called mouria

I used to be a big fan of extra credits. Then, years ago, I tried to bring up this very point on one of their videos. The resulting toxic stew hurled in my face left me so disgusted and disheartened I haven’t been able to watch an extra history video since. I really hope that doesn’t happen here, but I feel like this is something people need to be discussing, but I only ever hear it from idiots screaming “SJW libtards” or “Retarded nazi conservatives”. Never an actually civil, intelligent discussion. So, the question-isn’t using C.E. And B.C.E. Disingenuous? Even, dare I say it, racist? Disingenuous because you’re still using Anno Domini, you’ve just arbitrarily changed the letters. And racist because-every culture in the world has their own count of years. The Muslims count from Muhammad, the Japanese count by the reigns of emperors, etc. The A.D. count is just OUR cultures count. So why should ours be eradicated, but they get to keep theirs? If you wanted to be culturally sensitive when talking about non-European descent peoples, why not use THEIR count? Obviously, because you’re speaking to a European-descended audience, and those counts wouldn’t mean anything to us. So then, why not pick an event which actually significantly affected all mankind as the start of a universal, Pan-cultural count? The end of world war 2, perhaps, or the end of the last glacial period? It just feels like a hollow, half-assed attempt by the scholarly community to be inclusive, whilst ironically excluding European history and culture. And it supports those few people who claim we don’t HAVE cultures to begin with-that we’re nothing but drooling, idiot magpies, mindlessly appropriating ACTUAL people’s cultures. Yeah, there are LEGITIMATELY people who think that. So? Thoughts? Anyone?
