If I could have a conversation with any person in History, it's Machiavelli. Easy. And I wouldn't even have to do anything, I'd just say "So, tell me about Rome" and watch the fireworks. In the meantime, I'll settle for playing Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and liberating Roma with my boy Niccolò.

If you're gonna be a prince be the least bad prince you can be. Until we have a political system untethered from power we at least need to make sure that the people who do end up in charge, who are often not great people, are at least invested in the success of their subjects and will compromise their own morals and goals for their subjects.

Great video. I began to worldbuild in 1979. Keep on the Borderlands. The writings of Machiavelli were and are a boon to this day. I recommend anyone who is going to either DM or play read at least The Prince. By the by, The Prince has a lot of useful information for those in supervision, and just dealing with folks.

'The Prince' was written after Machiavelli spent a significant amount of time with Pope Alexander, formerly Rodrigo Borgia, and his family. I would highly recommend the Audiobook Rise and Fall of the Borgias by William Landon as there's a whole chapter where he covers Machiavelli's relationship with the Borgias and how/why they became the inspiration. As well as why it seems he's advocating for some really negative stuff from future leaders.

Coming back to this video after having to read it for class. I can see why he's so misunderstood because most students just read the chapters and take everything at face value and answer quiz questions. We never went over any of the Historical Context about Machiavelli's life and the times. If you just read it without knowing Ancient History or the history of the times Machiavelli lived in you won't really understand it.

People are forgetting that, throughout 99.99 percent of history playing dirty or "immorally" was the standard of leadership. He was just analysing what made certain governments successful, and big newsflash military strategists and rulers don't usually take into account how ethical their ways are. Most if not all of the successful empires in history would have been nothing without their evil, ruthless ways. Nevermind, i watched the ending 😂my point still stands

This is a good video, but I think you should have at least mentioned The Art of War. Which was, unlike the Prince, published during his lifetime and received well. It's a bit of drag in certain places, but it's a fascinating analysis of classical and Renaissance warfare and an attempt to further Machiavelli's ideal of the national army, radically, and also an attempt to create an army capable of defeating France and the HRE. It's in some ways very political, cavalry/knights feature little, essentially placing military agency in the hands of citizens and farmers (like his Florentine militia before the fall of the republic). It's definitely a worthwhile read.

So the main thing I'm getting about Machiavelli is that he was a smart guy who gets constantly misunderstood as a conniving, power-hungry schemer because people don't read they just quote. That definitely sounds like people. Thanks for the clarification Blue!

Awesome rant. As a lifelong fan of Machiavelli (first read The Prince in a school library in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, Washington state as a teenage exchange student back in the 80s) I really feel you Blue. Your take reminds me of a lot of stuff I’ve read on unfair cheaty things not to do in rhetoric. And they always say ”We don’t tell you this so you can use it. That is BAD and you absolutely shouldn’t. We only teach this stuff so you can recognize it and defend against it.” Maybe you’re right and something like that was Machiavellis actual intention. Myself, I’ve always taken him more like ”Deep sigh. Okay. But if we’re gonna have dictatorship, can we at least have *competent* dictatorship?”

I am from Italy and we study Machiavelli,I can explian better why big fanboy of republic he talked in that way of prince. Machiavelli was pagmatic and wished for unification of Italy he think the best way for do it was by a strong leader, after Italy was free from other countries it could pass to republic. Also we haven't forget he was men of his time, and murder was grave like theft

I've been angry about how people treat Machiavelli since I read The Prince for the first time, about 15 years ago. Even if take as could advice, the book isn't about how anyone should do things, but about what happens when things are done in a certain way. It is science saying that if you want to be a prince, then you'll have to do it all or face the consequences. And that no amount of propaganda, lies and political clot will change what you've done.

On the idea that the book was intended for exposing monarchies, the only groups of people that'd find it useful in combating monarchs would be kind hearted Kings/Nobles, currently ran Republics, and Peasants. Kind hearted kings would likely be uncommon, but the most useful to see the book from that prospective I assume, for Nobles, he argues that both Nobles want to push people around, and exploit them, and that most people are typically selfish (selfish bit is especially present in Mercenaries/Auxiliaries.) That, and his argument that conspiracies are too risky, and almost never work, especially if you're following his actual advice makes noble uprising for a fair Republic almost impossible. That leaves the Peasants, which 1, probably can't read, and 2, won't have access to that literature in the first place. For republics, the book mostly goes on *maintaining power*, and not gaining stuff related to gaining is present, but not the focus, I really doubt Republics need to become aware of why Monarchs aren't desireable, and he argues that they'll most likely rise up if not destroyed by the monarch, and or if the Monarch isn't living there/if there aren't people being replaced by the monarch's citizens. I don't really know who this would be useful for, i'd consider the argument he wrote it in anger, and disgust, instead of trying to make social change, but the quote cited using the word 'useful,' doesn't really add up with that idea.
