When I first studied Ancient Philosophy in college I thought it was engaging and interesting to discuss and whatever, but only years later did I come to appreciate the true hilarity of these Wise-Guys.

God, I love this channel. You sir single-handedly made me the cool kid in my philosophy class. As a history dork in my grade 12 intro to philosophy class, I already had some prior knowledge, unfortunately, my peers did not, with a dry textbook and grouchy teacher people were confused and angry. Enter This video. Now I am hailed as a hero. So thanks?

I can't even say how much I love the phrase "For every Plato's Republic there is an equal and opposite Diogenes peeing at a banquet table." I want to use this line so badly. Anyone know how I can casually insert this into a conversation like it's a wise, relatable proverb?

So Aristotle and sigmund Freud are basically the same guy. Incredibly influential, in Freud's case, took psychology all the way from "a dinner joke cured with heroin" to a recognized and respected science, Aristotle pushing philosophy about as far from where it was left for him, But both of them were weird, creepy, sexist, and wrong about every conclusion they ever put forth.

Diogenes bringing the chicken to platos lecture actually is pretty profound and very applicable to some near future concerns we will be having. There are advances that are making some sci-fi tech a possibility within our lifetimes Namely cybernetics and genetic engineering that might have some people wonder if these are actually humans anymore. If Diogenes saw a man with gills and claws and cybernetic wings and a 20,000 IQ with rippling muscles and cybernetic eyes Diogenes would still see a man a fearsome one to be sure but a man nonetheless Be like Diogenes

Maybe I'm alone in this but I've always really liked Aristotle's writing style. Granted I've only read him in translation so maybe translators give him a lot of help. But in any case, "Cicero said Aristotle had good style, but I don't think this book does" seems like a very subjective argument from which to draw historical conclusions. I also don't understand how sophists get such a bad rep. Their crime is apparently that instead of teaching their own philosophy as The Truth, they simply taught their students how to argue and understand/defend different positions. But that's how most people today think philosophy _should_ be taught! So what exactly did the sophists do wrong? Charge money for their services? What's so wrong about that? Philosophy professors today do it while still getting on this weird high horse about sophists.

I will not forgive Democritus for not having access to the LHC. If he’d have asked the Evil Demon nice enough, they’d have moved him through 4-dimensional hyperspace so he could’ve done his due diligence. Real philosophers don’t live their lives chained to a wall watching shadow puppets!

Here's the odd thing. I didn't know about the stunts Diogenes pulled until watching this video... and I share his views on hating social rules, material wealth, and cultural constructs masking true human behavior (which is self-serving for the most part, I would think), particularly when it comes to people who reap the benefits of inherently biased socio-political systems. Of course, I'll leave off on peeing in the street thanks.

The origin of the Greek word for human, ἄνθρωπος is a really interesting one, and many philosophers debated about it. -Κρατύλος (from Cratylus) Briefly, he believed that all beasts have no capacity of investigating and reflecting upon what they see, or observe closely (ἀναθρεῖν)- human however, he can both see (ὄπωπε) and reflect upon what he has seen (ἀναθρεῖ). Therefore, he believed that rightfully human was called ἄνθρωπος, since of all animals he only can do what has been mentioned. Ἄνθρωπος is therefore presented as a mixture of ἀναθρεῖν (to reflect/ observe closely) and ὄπωπε (see). Though he is saying this because he is a philosopher. It’s probably from ἀνδρός (genitive of the word for man ἀνήρ) + ὤψ (like) hence, man-like/resembling a man. However that would give ἄνδρωπος and not ἄνθρωπος.

LongSchlong Silver

This bled into Rome too. For a thousand years Rome didn't invent a single thing, because it was considered ungentlemanly to do any physical work
LongSchlong Silver
LongSchlong Silver Oy oldin
Because he said the physical world was an illusion, therefore useless to focus on and that the "unchanging world of the aether" was what really mattered, it was believed that there was no point to experiment or put your theories to the test. That's why there were so many outlandish claims. If plato had dissected a female cadaver once he would've realised that the womb doesn't move around and cause diseases

Nicholas Fallbrook
Nicholas Fallbrook 28 kun oldin
A lot of philosophical “doctrine“ or “standard“ for the middle ages wasn't even Aristotelian. I believe that various forms of Platonic philosophy (I guess you could call them Neoplatonism for simplicity even though I'm sure it's more complicated) were dominant for at least half of that time. But in those days empiricism was not a fully developed concept so getting physical observable evidence to prove anyone wrong wasn't encouraged either.

Peter 2 oy oldin
The main problem with Aristotle is he is basically the embodiment of confirmation bias. He took everything he already believed as ironclad truth and tried to come up with rationaliztions for these beliefs instead of considering other possibilities. Sonetimes this works out, like some of the obvious morality in Ethics, but it's painfully obvious when you look at any of his takes on people and society because everything is just an attempt to justify why Athenian society was the best. "We have slavery and treat women like shit, and we are obviously right, therefore there must be logical reasons for them to deserve this treatment."

Plato reminds me of Confucius, who is like 2 meters tall, extremely ugly and incredibly jacked. In fact, he accepted meat as payment for his teaching. But when you think about it, if you want to go around spreading ideas of ethics in a time where people are more concerned with killing each other, ya gotta have some arms to back you up.

When it comes to logic and intellectual reasoning, he is a must read because they way he THINKS is amazing. That's why he is still taught today (see logical fallacies).
